Bottling Smoke

There’s a metaphor about trying to define concepts that are ineffable or elusive, things such as creativity and artistry, that likens the struggle to define to that of trying to bottle smoke. I myself have used this metaphor, but then I am a lazy writer - sorry, George Orwell.

But it occurs to me that if you are standing in a room filled with smoke, a bottle and cork in hand, there are bigger questions to consider: where is the smoke coming from? Do you need a fire extinguisher or marshmallows?

Even if you do get a lid on that smoky bottle, chances are, when you come back to it, all the smoke will have seeped out. If not, the best you can do is sit and look at bottled smoke - you can’t interact with it, smell it, feel it. Yes, you have removed the smoke from its source, but you have also removed yourself from the experience.

Much better to take your chances and seek out the bonfire itself.
